Foothills Math Club

Advisor:  Mr. Brewer, Room 210, 664-8961, (extension 2210)

Club Time:  Thursday and Friday, 7:15 A.M. to 7:50 A.M.

Where:  Meet by the gate near the Library.  We will use the Library classroom.

What to Bring: Bring a pencil and calculator for each meeting.

Club Strategy:  Table competitions with prizes.  Each table will consist of a mix of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.  Winning teams will present their solutions.

Club Material:  A variety of materials will be used for table competitions.  At the beginning of the year, competition materials from 5th and 6th grades will be used.  As the year continues, competition materials from 7th and 8th grades will be used.  By the end of the year, high school competition materials will be used.  It will be amazing how much math is learned by students during the year.

Competition teams:  Students who want to represent FMS at math tournaments will need to try out for grade level teams.  Short assessments will be given to determine team members.  Additional math packets (for study) will be given to team members to prepare for tournaments.  Specific information about tournaments will be given to competition team members and their parents prior to each tournament.

Competitions:  FMS will participate in the "Math is Cool" tournament throughout the year.  The 8th grade tournament will be in October followed by the 7th grade tournament and then the 6th grade tournament.  Since 1993, FMS has won both team and individual awards at each tournament.  During February, all grade levels will participate in the "Math Counts" tournament.  This is the most difficult competition for the year. The regional competition is usually held in Wenatchee and at FMS.

Enrichment:  The "Math Club" is connected to the FMS Enrichment Program, "Falcon Flyers, "  directed by our librarian/teacher, Ms. Mowat.

Cost:  The "Math Club" is sponsored by the ASB at Foothills.  They support a budget for competiton cost and travel expenses of about $900 a year.  Therefore, "Math Club" members must purchase an ASB sticker at the beginning of the year.  The ASB card containing the sticker can be used for many activiites throughout the year, including high school sporting events.

Parent Involvement:  All parents of competitiors are able to travel to tournaments.  Details for teams, dates and times will be determined when team members are selected.  Parent help in training for competitions will also be encouraged.

Student Involvement:  Students must have current ASB stickers on their ASB cards.  Weekly involvement in club will promote problem solving skills that will help on the state WASL assessments, mathematics in the classroom, and in regional and state math tournaments.
