In our writing class you will become a better writer. You will have many opportunities to write in different forms and for different purposes. As you work hard to improve your skills, you will prepare yourself for the WASL and future.

Through assignments and personal writing you do, my hope is that you will explore who you are as a person and find your unique voice as a writer. As Jean Little, the author of several children's books found when she was a child, "there is power in words."

Our class will provide daily writing practice of conventions, the six traits, and the writing process. I will model writing for you frequently. I expect questions and hard work. Afterall, practice does make perfect.

This year you will write: poetry, memoirs, non-fiction (Choose Your Own Adventure, etc.), persuasive essays (Own the Throne, Amazon.com Book Review, etc.), short stories, and technical writing (resumes, etc.).

 

Parents: You can help by reading your child's writing and offering constructive feedback while your child is drafting their paper. Your child should practice writing conventionally--with correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar from the beginning of the writing process.

One way to help your child, is to listen while they read their writing out loud to you. Listen and then talk about what you noticed. Ask questions about parts that you didn't understand. Talk about parts you really liked or wished were more detailed. Remember they are young and are continally working to develop the art of writing. I've found kids appreciate honest, but gentle, responses to their writing.
