T eacher's Statement

I feel very fortunate and privileged to be teaching Spanish and ESL at Foothills Middle School.  I am living my dream.  This is what I've always wanted to do.  I teach Spanish to a mostly Anglo population and I also teach English to a mostly Latino population.  In this assignment, I get to see and experience some of the beliefs and misconceptions each population has about the other.  I feel it has truly provided me with some insight on student attitudes toward each other.  It also has provided me with some interesting topics for teaching culture to each of these groups.

My goal is to provide a safe classroom where students learn basic communication and writing skills in Spanish, and also learn some of the culture that goes with that language.  Hopefully this can be accomplished in a non-threatening, low-risk and fun-filled environment.

Vocabulary tests are given frequently.  The words are chosen from the lists that are at the end of each chapter in the text.  You can find a list of some of the vocablulary words for the entire text here.  It is extremely important that you study vocabulary at home on a daily basis.

I encourage you to click on all the links in this site in order to familiarize yourself with its contents.

As usual, I am looking forward to a great year of teaching and learning.  Yes, I said......learning.  I am one of those people who believe that learning is a continuous process that simply has no end.

Please see syllabus link above for materials needed list.

Current Information

We just finished Unit 3 and  will now move on to Unit 4. I continue to be pleased with the effort of the students as a whole. Please continue to encourage them to make flash cards and use them often. Remember, they can also make flash cards for verb conjugations.

Please refer to the course outline above to help you with what we will focus on in unit 4.

Just a reminder  that we will continue  to introduce more Spanish verbs in this unit. This is a time when some students become a little confused and, dare I say, a little lazy.   For this reason, please continue to stress studying at home .  Remember, you can also make flash cards for verb conjugations.

Check this site frequently for updates.

You can also visit the En Español website. See in helpful links above.

I nformation about receiving WHS credit.

Spanish I grades from middle school don't automatically go onto a student's high school transcript. Each student must discuss this option with their appointed counselor during their freshman year. Once a grade is entered on the high school transcript it becomes a permanent record. Some students choose not to have the grade on their transcript in case they are a 4.0 student all the way through high school and any grade lower than an A, affects their status for Valedictorian.  If a student chooses to have the middle school grade for Spanish I on their high school trancript, they (student and parent) sign a form requesting this. The WHS counselors have access to their middle school grades, so the registrar will post the grade directly from their middle school record. If you have any further questions, please let me know.
