Why Social Studies?

Over the last five thousand years, human beings have developed from nomadic hunter-gatherers in the plans of Africa to technological tinkers walking on the moon.  The study of past and present societies helps us to better understand who we are today.  By understanding the currents that have shaped our past, we are empowered to harness our potential and better equipped to shape our future.

What does Social Studies mean?

Social Studies is the study of societal trends.  It is not about memorizing dates and names. There is not enough time within a school year to cover even a fraction of our history in a meaningful way.  Thus we will explore common treads such as culture, politics & government, economics, geography and religion in various ancient societies.  Through comparing similarities and identify differences we will explore how our past impacts our lives today. 

Reading & Language Arts

The most important skill is the ability to communicate.  In addition to exploring our historical past, we will intentionally practice and develop our reading and writing skills.  This will include daily journaling in class and reading at school and home.
