Falcon Flyers Challenge

2007 - 2008

PURPOSE: To provide a voluntary enrichment program available to all 6th, 7th & 8th graders at FMS

GOAL: To encourage students to "go above and beyond " becoming actively involved in their school and community

Why should I be involved in the Challenge Program? The middle school years are an excellent time for students to begin setting goals and working to achieve them. Research shows that students who are well connected to their school and community in a variety of ways are more likely to excel. This program encourages students to become self-confident, well-rounded students with a broad repertoire of skills and experiences to draw from. Good habits, motivation and high expectations set in middle school readily transfer to high school and beyond opening up a future of opportunity.

How will I be recognized for my effort? Students who participate in the Falcon Flyers Challenge Program will be formally recognized for their accomplishments. Their names will be displayed on a bulletin board and published in the school newsletter. An achievement ribbon will be given to students who meet one of the three levels of standards. In addition, a medal will be given to students who have earned Gold Feathers at the end-of-the-year assembly. Further recognition, including a trophy, will be given to eighth grade students who have earned Gold Feathers all three years at FMS. See the chart below for detail on the Levels of Accomplishment.

Am I eligible for the end-of-the-year field trip? Students who meet the requirements at the highest level will qualify for the end-of-the-year field trip with students from Orchard and Pioneer Middle Schools. The 2007 field trips are: 6th graders to Central Washington University and the Chimposium, 7th graders to the University of Washington and the Woodland Park Zoo, and the 8th graders to Seattle for a marine biology cruise on Puget Sound.

How do I sign up? A planning session will be held at the beginning of the school year for students considering participation in the Falcon Flyers Challenge Program. Requirements, suggested projects and future events will be discussed. As soon as the parent permission form is returned to Ms. Mowat in the Library, students are enrolled. Students will be given a recordkeeping folder (Tally Folder), including the due date for turn in.

Points will be earned and Tally Folders due as follows: .
1st Term: 9/4 - 12/14 (Folders due 1/4)
2nd Term: 1/2- 4/18 (Folders due 4/25)
