I love teaching Social Studies because it connects us with so many interesting cultures and places. Our curriculum will primarily focus on Ancient Civilizations including: China, Egypt, India, Greece, Rome, and Medieval Europe. With each of these we see how the four cultural universals: social, beliefs, economics, and government effect these people and are intertwined with each other. In addition, students will strive to think deeply about history and its causes and effects that produce change. We will also continue our work with world geography and climate.

A variety of activities are used to integrate reading and writing with the Social Studies units. For example, the China unit will challenge students to take a time machine to Ancient China and participate in the "Amazing Race" while collecting handmade artifacts and touring the countryside. Another unit relies on textbooks and video files or presentations to accumulate information. Art, media, drama, and literature is used throughout all of the units not only to accomodate different learning syles, but to provide meaning and fun.

Units are tested using the same questions for each time period. Students are given a pretest at the beginning to fill out while studying the culture and then tested at the end.
