Reading Class and
Projects
In my reading class, students develop better reading skills. I believe
that the best way to learn to read better is to read everyday. That means
my students read everyday, I read to them, and together we do special
projects with reading. I feel that students need an approach that is sensitive
to their multiple intelligence to really explore their own learning. In
our class music, drama, and art are all important aspects of the curriculum.
My most important goal is for my students to develop a love for reading.
We have quarterly assessments to develop students' abilities to be competent
toward the WASL targets. Lastly,
one day a week we do a readers workshop in which my students get the opportunity
to choose between a number of different reading opportunities, such as;
silent reading, literature
projects, story clubs, literature
conferences, (book
clubs 1, 2,
&3)or
Wildside series of stories.
Below, you will find some of the projects that we
complete in my class.
Courtcase
trying the Big Bad Wolf and the 3 pigs. After analyzing different variations
of this story, our student decide for themselves in The Johnson Court
of Law. Students have to think on their toes, and be creative. Every student
in my class has a part in this case from the Wolf himself to court room
sketcher.

Night
of the Notables. For this unit of study, my students will study an eminent
person, read their biography, and then become that person for an evening.
These "notable" people had to have made a postive influence on Society.

the rubric. Here's
a N. of Notables Calander. Coming soon is a student example.

Not Guesswork - 7th grade reading and writing vocabulary
list
Students work with a standard vocabulary list which does not change during
the year. They take a quiz on this vocabulary list each week. This is
the district wide vocabulary list in reading and writing and is used also
in the 6th and 8th grades. (See
DNG list)
Cinderella
Hyperstudio project - After studying the original (Peralt's
Cinderella) each student gets to have a variant Cinderella
(There are hundreds of variants from around the world) to
study and compare to the original. Each student then does a
retell of thier variant using a computer program called
Hyperstudio. This is very fun project enjoyed by almost all
of my students. To see the lesson go to: http://prodev.wsd.wednet.edu/topics/familyguides/lessons/cinderellavariant6thgrade/cinderellavariant.htm
