Writing
In our writing class we will become better writers. I
want my students to have opportunities to write for many
different purposes and in many different forms. Yes, we will
write to pass the WASL, (see
a student demo - requires Quicktime Movie) but more
importantly we will write to communicate more effectively as
a life long skill. Almost every day we begin our class with
a short convention practice and a journal write. We will
accomplish two pieces of writing a quarter. We will work
with the Six Traits of Writing and through the Writing
Process. I will modle writing often for your children.
Expository, Persuasive, and poetry are among some of our
focused writings.
Poetry
- our class will work with many different forms of poetry.
One item that my students create is a powerpoint
presentation to demonstrate a concrete poem. See
an example.
Our Class holds a coffee house evening of poetry. This is an evening
of candle light, cookies, cocoa, and poetry. See some pictures (Picture
1, Picture 2,
Picture 3).
See student demo (requires Quicktime Media).
Writer's Workshop: What if you were always forced to write on a topic
given to you and then expected to write a certain number of paragraphs
to do it in? Sounds boring, doesn't it? This year I am trying to given
students more and more time to write on topics that they are passionate
about and to write to who they want and, lastly, to use
any form they choose. Yes, that means they might be writing anything from
bumperstickers to persuasive editorials. If you see your child working
on a euology and they say it is for class, probably they are telling you
the truth. Research shows that good writers express themselves by delving
into things that they feel passionate about. See some of the rubrics that
we use. Also check out some of my writing rules for this. Mr.
