Foothills Middle School Physical Education Grading System
At Foothills Middle School our P.E. program emphasizes fitness, socialization and participation. We encourage our students to participate as much as possible and to the best of their ability. Therefore, our grading system is weighted in the following way:
The participation grade is separated into two parts; 1) daily class participation and preparation and 2) participation during fitness and game activities.
Daily class participation and preparation points are given to the students at the beginning of each quarter and total 270 points. Students who are prepared for class and participate retain their points, and those who donÕt have points taken away. These points are known as Òpoints not earnedÓ. The following list describes the point value of common Òpoints not earnedÓ:
á Absence Ð 10 pts. *
á Excused Non Suit Ð 10 pts. *
á Non Suit Ð 10 pts.
á Opt Out Ð 10 pts.
á Tardy Ð 5 pts.
á Partial Suit Ð 5 pts.
á Demerit (behavior was off task or disruptive) Ð 5 pts.
á Gum Ð 5 pts.
á No planner Ð 5 pts.
á School Related Absence Ð 0 pts.
(* Non school related absences and excused non suits need to be made up by completing a P.E. MAKE-UP FORM to regain the 10 points not earned.)
Participation during fitness and game activities makes up the second part of the participation grade. Students earn points based on a 4 point rubric scale as seen in the following example:
á 4 pts. Ð exceeds standard
á 3 pts. Ð meets standard
á 2 pts. Ð approaching standard
á 1 pt. Ð below standard
These points are added to the studentÕs total points and accumulate during the quarter. If a student is absent during a graded activity, an ÒincompleteÓ is awarded until a P.E. MAKE-UP FORM is completed. The ÒincompleteÓ then becomes excused and the zero grade is erased.
The remaining portion of the P.E. grade is made up of homework, tests/quizzes and planner/classwork grades weighted 10% each. Typically, each quarter students are assessed on one homework assignment, one quiz and one or two planner grades.
